Visualizing Derrida: The Architecture of Meaning

This poster series explores the complex philosophical concepts of Jacques Derrida through everyday visual metaphors and poetic typography. Post-structuralist philosophy often deals with the elusive nature of language and meaning. My goal was to translate Derrida’s highly abstract ideas—Deferral, Différance, and Deconstruction—into tangible, relatable imagery, accompanied by short verses that capture the essence of his thought.

1/3: Deferral

The Metaphor: The Alarm Clock

In Derrida’s philosophy, meaning is never fully present; it is constantly postponed. To illustrate "Deferral," I used the metaphor of an alarm clock. Just as time endlessly moves forward and alarms can be snoozed, meaning is always delayed, pushed into the future, and waiting on the next word to make sense. The clock represents the perpetual waiting state of language—the moment of absolute clarity exists, but it never arrives.

2/3: Différance

The Metaphor: The Sealed Package

"Différance" is Derrida’s coined term combining "difference"
and "deferral." It suggests that words only mean things by
being different from other words, and their ultimate meaning
is always out of reach. I represented this with a sealed, generic shipping
box. We know the box exists, it occupies space, and it
relates to a system of logistics—but the meaning
(the contents inside) remains sealed off, in transit,
and never directly accessible.

3/3: Deconstruction

The Metaphor: The Disassembled Structure

A common misconception about "Deconstruction" is that
it means destruction. For Derrida, it is an analytical practice.
It is about taking a structure apart to reveal the hidden tensions, assumptions, and foundational flaws that hold it together.
The metaphor of a dismantled measuring tool (a folding ruler)
illustrates this perfectly. Nothing is broken or destroyed;
the structure is simply laid bare so its internal workings and
artificial whole can be examined.
